What is the 30C Tax Credit?

The 30C Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property tax credit is a provision under the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA) that incentivizes the installation of electric vehicle (EV) charging stations and other types of refueling infrastructure for low-carbon fuels.

How much can you get from the 30C Tax Credit?

  • Credit Amount: Organizations can receive a base credit of 6% of the total cost of a project including the hardware and installation. This amount can be quintupled to 30% if specific Prevailing Wage and Apprenticeship (PWA) rules are followed related to the installation of the project.
  • Maximum Credit: The 30C credit is limited to $100,000 per single item of property for commercial installations.

How to Qualify for the 30C Tax Credit?

  • Geography: To be eligible for the 30C tax credit, a project must be located in an eligible census tract (non-urban or low-income areas).The Department of Energy has a map that allows you to look-up the geographic eligibility of a given project site address.
  • Credit maximization: If a project is located in an eligible census tract, then it can claim the 6% tax credit pursuant to the 30C rules. To qualify for the full 30% tax credit for 30C, a project must also comply with Prevailing Wage and Apprenticeship (PWA) rules and maintain records including payroll and registered apprentice program certifications to demonstrate compliance.

How To Claim the 30C Tax Credit?

  • Source Tax Credit form: Any organization claiming the 30C credit must submit to the IRS with its annual tax return the Alternative Fuel Vehicle Refueling Property Credit tax form known as the Form 8911.
